2 bailiffs, suspect dead in Michigan courthouse shooting


ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (WDTN/WOOD) – Three people have been fatally shot and one injured in a shooting at the Berrien County Courthouse in Southwest Michigan, according to a county commissioner.

The Sheriff of Berrien County, Michigan just gave an update to the media. In that update, Sheriff Paul Bailey said two Bailiff’s were shot and are dead. A Berrien County Deputy was also shot and is now at the Lakeland Regional Hospital in St. Joseph in stable condition.


The commissioner confirmed to 24 Hour News 8 that two of the victims are courthouse employees and the other fatality, an inmate who was in custody at the time of the shooting, was the shooter.

The severity of the surviving victim’s injuries is unknown.

The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. at the courthouse, which is located on Port Street in St. Joseph.

The courthouse is still on lockdown, but the scene is secure, the commissioner confirmed.
