Xenia police officer earns ‘City’s Finest’ award

XENIA, Ohio (WDTN) – A patrolman here is being called the “City’s Finest.”

Officer David Elliott recently received the department’s highest honor for his community policing efforts. Elliott, a 4-year veteran with Xenia Police, was recognized with the Casey Elliott Memorial Award for consistently going above and beyond.

“I think everybody gets into law enforcement with the idea or thought of making the community or the place they work better,” Elliott said.

The “City’s Finest” award, named after an officer who served with Xenia Police from 1943-1978, annually honors police officers who show outstanding bravery or humanitarian service.

David Elliott, who has no relation to the award’s namesake, said, “It’s a good feeling (to win the award). It’s a very high honor, but I did not expect it.”

Elliott serves on the regional SWAT team and department bike patrol. He also works as a field training officer, guiding newly sworn officers, and helps coach cadets at the police academy.

This spring, 2 NEWS anchor John Seibel presented the patrolman with a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) award for his efforts to crack down on impaired drivers. The department calls Elliott one of its top OVI enforcers.

Aware of growing tensions between law enforcement and the public, Elliott strives to create meaningful connections with the community.

“I think the thing that you can do most is just to be visible to the community, be interactive with the community, be approachable to the community,” he said.

He also commended the Xenia Police Department for promoting such interactions and said it makes positive community relations a priority.

“I would say the vast majority of law enforcement officers go out of their way everyday to prove to people that this is a job service,” he said. “(We) try to show the citizens we are here to support them, help them and truly try to make this a better place for them and us.”
