I Love Dayton: Doctor saves lives, gives back to community

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A Miami Valley Hospital surgeon is making a difference on more than one level. Dr. Peter Ekeh is credited with saving lives inside the hospital and shaping young lives in the community.

Kenneth Coleman doesn’t remember what happened the night his car slid off the road and hit a pole, leaving him in a coma for months. He suffered a traumatic head injury that left him permanently disabled.

“The impact to my head caused the blindness,” he says.

It was a life-changing injury, but it could have been a lot worse. Kenneth’s wife, Stacey, credits the doctors at Miami Valley Hospital for going above and beyond to treat her husband: especially Dr. Ekeh.

“There is no doubt, they did everything up and beyond the call of duty,” she said.

Dr. Peter Ekeh, adding, “It’s those times when you make a difference. When you see people like Kenneth and Stacey Coleman, a year later, looking in a very different place and advancing with their lives. Such stories like that definitely help us keep going.”

But his service to the Miami Valley community goes beyond the trauma center. He also volunteers time organizing field trips for students at Dayton Boys Preparatory Academy to speak with doctors and get a first-hand look at how things work in a hospital.

“I got 'Thank You' letters from all the kids that came here. I still keep them, I treasure them very much,” says Dr. Ekeh.

But it’s his record of work inside surgery suites that, for people like Kenneth Coleman, makes the biggest difference.

“I’m so grateful and thankful,” Coleman says. “They did an awesome job with me.”

“The Bible talks about treating others like you would want to be treated and I try to follow that golden rule, as it’s said,” Dr. Ekeh says.
