HANOVER TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) - A former Wayne High School standout quarterback is one of two University of Cincinnati football players injured in a single vehicle crash in Butler County that left a player from Hamilton dead.
The accident happened around 10:30 p.m. Saturday on Stahlheber Road near Morman Road in Hanover Township as the three freshman football players, and the car’s driver, were headed home from the UC-Miami game in Oxford.
Nineteen-year-old Ben Flick, an offensive lineman from Hamilton, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Javon Harrison, a wide receiver from Huber Heights, and Mark Barr, a wide receiver from Florida, were also hurt in the crash and taken to UC Medical Center by helicopter. Harrison was released from the hospital Monday afternoon.
Barr was last listed in critical condition.
All three of the players were in a red shirt season, meaning they are part of the team but do not play in games to keep a year of eligibility under their belts.
“I can’t put into words how tragic this is,” Head Coach Tommy Tuberville said. “As a father and a coach, it’s something you hope you never have to go through. Ben was so proud to be a part of this team and University. He worked hard and had shown a great deal of improvement since the summer. His future was bright. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Flick family on their loss. We also hope and pray for Mark and Javon to recover from their injuries.”
The vehicle’s driver has been identified as Sean Van Dyne. He is a Miami University student.
