MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) - Montgomery County is now offering to pay you for turning in old tires.
The program is the first of its kind in Ohio. The goal is to clean-up the scrap tires officials say have been illegally dumped across the county.
The tire buyback is Saturday September 21 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Welcome Stadium in Dayton.
You'll get two dollars a tire. There's a maximum of 10 tires per vehicle because that's how many you are allowed to haul by law without a special permit.
The buyback is for Montgomery County residents only.
County officials aren't sure how many tires they'll get but judging from the calls they're taking they think it will be a lot.
"We're going to get thousands of tires that day," says John Woodman with the Solid Waste District.
That means thousands of dollars the Solid Waste District will be paying out of its budget.
But Woodman sees the buyback as a money saver because crews won't have to pick up as many tires.
"They're going to spend less money," Woodman says. "It's going to be less time and trucks and effort to pick these tires up if they've been brought to us."
With an estimated 17,000 scrap tires scattered across Montgomery County, Woodman doesn't expect the buyback to completely solve the problem and tires aren't the only things people are dumping.
You can find other kinds of trash piled in alleys and abandoned lots.
But between the buyback and other things like cameras to catch violators, he thinks its a start.
"We're expecting a pretty enthusiastic response," Woodman says.
