An early Andy Cruse touchdown and a pair of Pat Hinkel interceptions helped Miami University's football team defeat Southern Illinois 30-14 Saturday afternoon at Yager Stadium in front of 17,725 fans.
Cruse led the RedHawks (1-1) in the school's home opener with a career-high 12 catches for 60 yards. The dozen receptions tie for eighth on Miami's single-game list. The senior wide receiver's 10-yard score in the back of the endzone came with 5:39 remaining in the first quarter.
Senior quarterback Zac Dysert finished the game completing 28 of 36 passes for 226 yards. He had one touchdowns and no interceptions.
The Salukis (0-2) evened the game late in the opening quarter after running back Mika'il McCall scored on a 1-yard run. The sophomore added another 1-yard score late in fourth quarter to round out the visitor's scoring.
SIU, a Football Championship Subdivision ( FCS) school, missed two field goals, one in the third from 42 yards out, and another in the fourth from 33 yards.
Hinkel, a senior linebacker, returned his first interception of the game 24 yards into the endzone to put Miami up 14-7 at the 12:41 mark in the second quarter.
The RedHawks, who led14-7 at halftime, broke open the game after the break, scoring on a freshman Kaleb Patterson 30-yard field goal and a Jamire Westbrook 12-yard run. The freshman running back had 5 carries for 18 yards. Hinkel's second interception set up Westbrook's score, as he returned the pick down to the SIU 12-yard line.
Hinkel and junior linebacker Chris Wade led the team in tackles with 11 tackles apiece. Wade had seven solo stops for the RedHawks.
Spencer Treadwell closed out the game with a 16-yard TD run with 44 second remaining and pushed Miami over the 100-yard rushing mark with his final carry. The sophomore led the RedHawks in rushing with 16 carries for a career-high 73 yards.
Junior tight end Steve Marck also had a solid day with 4 receptions 73 yards to lead all players.
Miami finished with 349 yards of total offense, while Southern Illinois had 336.
