COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - BUCKEYES BUZZ: Coach Urban Meyer has made it very clear that he is not a guy to trumpet a player for a Heisman Trophy.
Still, he knows he has a rising candidate in QB Braxton Miller. And he knows that if Miller keeps up his gaudy stats -- he's averaging 329 yards a game in total offense, and is the top-rushing QB in the nation at 126 yards a game -- that it's inevitable that the Heisman talk will become more pervasive.
"'ve been lucky to have two guys go to New York (as Heisman finalists), and it's been fun to be a part of that," said Meyer, who was Florida's coach when Tim Tebow won the award in 2008. "I think at the appropriate time I (will say he's a candidate). I don't believe he is now. He's not playing well enough yet."
NOTE THIS: Make of this what you will, but three of Ohio State's next four opponents (UAB, Michigan State, Indiana) lost on Saturday. The lone winner was Nebraska, but its coach was forced to the hospital at halftime due to flu-like symptoms.
HONORS, BIG TEN-STYLE: Miller was the Big Ten's offensive player of the week after throwing for a career-high four touchdowns and rushing for another in the 35-28 comeback victory over California.
The defensive honors went to Penn State LB Mike Mauti.
INJURY LIST: Meyer said Monday that RB Carlos Hyde (sprain knee ligament) would not play Saturday against UAB (noon kickoff). He also said he didn't know if DL Michael Bennett (groin) would be available.
OSU'S NO. 1: No, not in the AP poll. The Buckeyes are 16th there. And not in the coaches' poll, which does not include teams on NCAA probation.
They are No. 1 in something called the OhioCollegeFootball.com rankings, believe it or not.
Not too surprisingly, Ohio State is No. 1, followed by Cincinnati (2-0), Ohio (3-0) and Toledo (1-1).
