MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WDTN) - Inspectors are expected to return to a condemned building in Middletown Monday after a weeken roof collapse.
Police have closed the road in front of the old furniture store on South Main Street.
The neighboring building houses the Hope House Rescue Mission. It's a homeless shelter that serves more than 30 people in the city.
When the roof caved in Sunday morning around 9:00, the shelter manager Gary Edwards tells were only a few people inside the shelter because most had already left to go to church.
One resident tells 2 NEWS he felt the ground shake and was scared the shelter was going to collapse too.
The fire and police departments were called and made everyone evacuate the shelter until a building inspector checked it to make sure it was structurally sound.
Edwards decided to move all the residents to the other side of the building for the night as a precaution.
"First I thought it was thunder and lightning and and just a real boom. but then once the windows began to shake and I saw debris falling from the top of the building my mind just went blank. I never thought it was the roof caving in next door," explains resident Gary Frazier.
"This is an old building. It's been great to the Hope House. It's answered every need we need of it but it is old and in the future can't nobody predict how this will turn out. In the long run, if something like this would happen again," says Edwards.
Edwards says they've been looking for another building for awhile but haven't found anything.
The Hope House is a non-profit organization.
