HAMILTON, Ohio (WDTN) - A teenager drowned in a canal that runs along Joe Nuxhall Boulevard in Hamilton, Tuesday night.
Rescuers say they arrived at the scene around 7:30 pm Tuesday to find a 15-year old girl clinging to a tree limb in the water. They were able to safely get her to shore.
Another teen, also 15, was swimming his way across the canal, but started to struggle.
Firefighters say a friend jumped in to try and save him, but had to turn around because the strong current.
Hamilton fire crews launched two boats to search for the missing teen. They then called for assistance from the Butler County Sheriff's Department to help in the search.
Around 11:45 p.m., Sheriff's deputies located the body of William Allen in the water. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"This is a very sand reminder that rivers and waterways are not meant to be play areas, " Sheriff Richard K. Jones said.
