Woman shoots man breaking into Dayton home

DAYTON (WDTN) -- A man was shot while trying to break into a house in Dayton.

It happened around 4:40 a.m. on Thursday at a house in the 200 block of Baltimore Street.

Police say a woman called 911 and said a man had been shot while trying to break into the house.

Medics removed the shooting victim. Dayton Police tell 2NEWS the suspect was taken to Miami Valley Hospital. No word on his condition.

Police say the man who was shot had a lengthy criminal history. They are not releasing his name at this time.

The homeowner says her family member, a woman inside, fired at an intruder trying to break-in to their home to protect her family.

"You have a right to protect your home and I think everybody understands that right, that you need to keep your home, your family safe," Sgt. Matt Beavers with the Dayton Police Department said. "I don't know if I'd call it a heads up, but she has a right to protect her home."

Police are still investigating the shooting.

"We're still digging through everything to see what happened," Beavers said. "Obviously, this is ongoing."

"Once we get further into interviews with her and further interviews with the husband to figure out what happened, who exactly fired the shot, who did what, what transpired prior to the shot being fired, we'll be able to give more answers."
