VANDALIA, Ohio (WDTN) - Daylight revealed the destruction caused by overnight storms in Vandalia.
"I didn't think it was nearly that bad and we got safe. We were one of the ones, lucky enough, that our side was okay but my neighbor is completely out of a house. We're looking at being out of our house until it takes to repair everything," says Ryan Fields.
"It's kind of hard to look at. It's a mess. It's a mess and it's going to take a lot to clean it up."comments Ashley Lairson.
Crews are working around the clock to restore power.
But before they can turn the lights back on, City of Vandalia building inspectors is going door-to-door to make sure that all of the structures are safe to do so.
At the height of the outage, more than 10,000 Dayton Power & Light customers were without service in the Miami Valley.
As the clean-up continues, the Better Business Bureau wants to make sure storm victims aren't taken advantage of in this vulnerable time.
BBB President and CEO John North says he's received reports that someone is going door to door, claiming to be a city employee sent to make repairs.
He says there are some things you need to do before you hand over any money.
"The first thing you need to do is check with your insurance company. There may be specific stipulations in your contract, in your provisions with the insurance company that tells you what to do and tells you who you can and can't use. So, always a good idea to start with your insurance company and second, check with your BBB," explains North.
DP&L tells 2 NEWS it hopes to have power restored to all customers by tomorrow.
If you need to report an outage, call 877-4-OUTAGE.
