WEST CARROLLTON, Ohio (WDTN) - A fire broke out in the bedroom of a West Carrollton home while a teen and her friend were home Saturday afternoon.
Crews were called to the 200 block of Grantwood Drive in West Carrollton on reports of a fire just before 3 p.m.
Fire officials said the teen and her friend tried to put out the flames themselves before calling firefighters.
When crews arrived, they quickly evacuated the home and doused the blaze.
"They attempted to put the fire out themselves which we tend to discourage," said West Carrollton Interim Fire Chief Chris Barnett. "The first thing is to call the fire department, and then, if you can try to get the fire out that's fine. But get us going on the call initially."
The entire house sustained smoke damage and is unlivable. The residents are staying with family and friends.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
