KETTERING, Ohio (WDTN) - Some young men in Kettering are feeling very lucky to be okay after the floor beneath them gave way. It happened at the Georgetown of Kettering apartments, and the renter said he never expected something like that to happen.
"It was about 2 o'clock and I was coming down the stairs, and I heard a big boom, like an earthquake or something," said Todd Norris. "I had no clue what it was. So, I came out and looked at the balcony and the whole thing was just completely everywhere."
The second-story balcony collapsed. His roommate and two buddies were outside having a smoke when it gave way, sending the three tumbling about 10 feet. Norris said one suffered a head injury, while the others suffered a hurt arm along with bumps and scrapes.
"All of a sudden I heard a really loud crack, and a bang," said neighbor Sabrina Wendling. "When I went out there I saw the balcony behind me had completely collapsed and was on the ground."
Wendling filmed video shortly after it happened. She said she saw the men just before the collapse. "At the time there were only three up there," she described. "They weren't jumping up and down or doing anything crazy."
Norris said he thinks the wood was rotted and gave way. All three 20-year-old men went to the hospital. The most serious injury was a concussion - lucky, said Norris.
"I'm just thankful no one below us was outside because someone could've died easily," he said.
We went to question the managers there at Georgetown apartments. APM Management told us they just took over the 2,500 unit apartment complex in December. They said they've been renovating ever since, but said they are still investigating Friday's deck collapse.
