DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - A police officer is trying to turn an overgrown diamond into a field of dreams for some Dayton kids. He now needs you to step up to the plate to make those dreams come true.
The baseball diamond was built two years ago on Elsmere Avenue near Fairview School but it has never been used. Dayton officer Matt Heiser explains the reason it sat empty for so long. "Equipment for the kids is costly and this is kind of a lower income neighborhood where parents have to choose food or playing sports."
Heiser and his fellow officers are going to put in the sweat equity to bring this neglected gem back to life, but they need help from the community, too. "We need gloves, helmets, bats and balls. Police officers are going to volunteer to clean up the field, coach and try to get parents involved."
The officers hope kids can learn some life lessons, along with the rules of the game. "You might get some bad pitches. You don't want to swing at those because you want to hit a home run and its the same thing in the game as in life," officer Jeff Hieber explained to the kids.
People who live and work in this community say the game, the leadership and the camaraderie would really be a blessing for this neighborhood. "It would make a huge difference in this community. School is no longer about reading, writing and arithmetic. Our kids are dealing with so many social issues and no outlets to get those things handled and sports is a great outlet for that," said Angela Moss from Fairview School.
