DAYTON (WDTN) - Fire officials are investigating a suspicious fire that claimed the life of a 74-year-old man.
The victim has been identified by the Montgomery County Coroner's Office as Michael Roberts. The cause of his death is still under investigation.
Neighbors called 911 before 4 a.m. Sunday when they realized Roberts' home in the 2800 block of Preston Street was on fire.
Witnesses broke out the windows of the house to try and help Roberts before firefighters arrived.
When crews pulled up on scene, they worked quickly to douse the flames. Officials tell 2 NEWS Roberts was unconscious when they pulled him from the home. They immediately began CPR and rushed him to Miami Valley Hospital where he later died.
"I'm just kind of at a loss for words," said Brandon Howard, who lives next door. "I don't know why this happened. I have no idea. He didn't bother anybody".
Firefighters said the man suffered smoke inhalation and heat exposure from flames.
The fire chief said he believes the fire started on the outside of the home and is calling the fire "suspicious".
