DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - "She's the world to me, we're each other's best friend," said Matt Arnold about his wife Angie. They have been married for 28 years, but they go way back.
"Yes, since the seventh grade," smiled Angie.
These junior high sweethearts fought hand-in-hand this past year when Angie was diagnosed with noninvasive breast cancer.
"You know we were in it together, and the doctor's were fantastic," said Matt.
He said learning his role in Angie's recovery was a balance.
"Tough thing I think for most men, is to take the back seat because we're problem solvers," he said. "We want to get in there and fix it. but you have to let the women come through it in their own way, and at times that's frustrating to each of us."
Angie chose to undergo a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. They stressed the importance of yearly mammograms, so like Angie, if the cancer is there it may be caught early.
"You know for the most part, we're back up and running," Matt said. "We do a lot of volunteer work at the cancer center now, and we're doing the things that we normally do. We're trying to not make it a be a big interruption in life."
"We've always had a good marriage, but this just made it more special to go through this together, and I think it has brought us closer," said Angie.
"It's always easy when it's easy," said Matt. "When the the chips are down, that's when you learn what you have."
