DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins June 1, and NOAA is forecasting an above normal season. The current forecast says there is a 70 percent likelihood of 13-20 named storms. Of the named storms seven to 11 could become hurricanes and three to six classified as major (category three or higher) hurricanes.
The seasonal average is 12 named storms, six hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.
The forecast is based on three climate factors, a strong west African monsoon, warmer than average water temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea and no El Nino.
This forecast does not predict how many storms will make landfall or where they will strike.
