FAIRBORN, Ohio (WDTN) - Teachers, parents and community members stepped to the mic at the Fairborn Board of Education meeting Thursday night.
One by one, each person voiced their concerns over contract negotiations between the Fairborn Education Association and the school district.
In June, the school board voted to cancel the FEA's contract, which means they are working without one.
However, the teachers union calls that illegal and, has filed a lawsuit with the State Employee Relations Board.
"I would like to suggest that you all do the honorable thing before you cause yourself and anyone else here anymore damage and resign today," says one parent who addressed the board.
Speakers were allowed three minutes each for a total of thirty minutes.
When that time ran out, the school board was asked by the audience to allow additional time for more speakers but the the only board member who voted in favor of that was Ronald Parks.
A district spokesperson tells me it's illegal for the board members to comment on ongoing contract negotiations but a couple did address the crowd.
"Everything that we have done so far has been completely within the laws of the State of Ohio," says school board member Michael Uecker.
FEA members recently voted to give leadership the power to file a 10-day strike notice.
"Our membership feels that the longer this goes on, the more likely it is that we have to send a final message to say that we've tried everything to send a message to you that this is illegal, it's disrespectful and it's wrong," comments FEA Spokesperson Brian McWhorter.
The two sides will meet again on October 22nd to try to work out a deal.
2 NEWS will, of course, continue to bring the latest developments on these negotiations.
