WPAFB, Ohio (WDTN) - The City of Fairborn will be known worldwide as the official name of a C-17 aircraft.
The C-17 Globemaster 3 was named the Spirit of the City of Fairborn during a ceremony at the Museum of the United States Air Force Tuesday.
This particular C-17 is the first of nine that arrived at the 445th Airlift Wing in 2011.
City leaders say the naming honor gives increased recognition to Fairborn.
"It's our hometown. They support us, our missions. They are there for us. They are our chance to give back to the community," said Colonel Steve Goeman, Wing Commander, 445th Air Wing.
"The rapport and camaraderie and the bond we have with our community, the City of Fairborn and the 445th Airlift Wing," said Mayor Tom Nagel, City of Fairborn.
This is not the first time the 445th named a plane after Fairborn.
A C-5 was also given the city's name six years ago.
