SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - A man accused of drunk driving for the 8th time faced a judge Friday.
Jerry Smith appeared with his lawyer in a Clark County courtroom.
He said, "Not really, it's over a lifetime." when asked if eight DUI is a lot.
He pleaded not guilty on charges of felony OVI, failure to control, driving under an OVI suspension and having an open container.
The police report says Smith and a passenger were on a motorcycle, traveling north on Limestone Street when they lost control and fell off.
Police say they smelled alcohol on both of them and authorities soon found a large cup of vodka they say Smith had been drinking out of while driving.
"One of the definitions of an alcohol use disorder is impairment in social functioning in terms of work and home and their personal lives and of someone is having DWIs that's affecting their social lives and business lives and so fourth so that a sign that this person may have a condition and needs help," said Mark Smith, Psychiatrist, Mental Health Services for Clark and Madison counties.
Mark Smith doesn't know Jerry Smith personally, but says those who feel they need help with alcohol should reach out to AA or other organizations like that.
