DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - The Montgomery County Coroner's office has identified 27-year-old Tyree Mitchell of Dayton as the man found shot to death outside an apartment complex in Dayton.
According to Dayton Police Sgt. Creigee Coleman, the victim was found shot in the inside a white car in the parking lot of the Whitmore Arms Apartments. Coleman said several witness were questioned. Police have also questions one possible person of interest.
Regional Dispatch says officers were called to the apartments on Midway Avenue near Almond Avenue on reports of a man being shot just after noon Saturday.
Homicide detectives are investigating.
In an 911 call, an unnamed woman is heard telling the dispatcher, "There was just a shootout out here and they're saying someone needs an ambulance. I don't know I'm in the house and I just heard."
Coleman now said witnesses will be key in the investigation. At this point, he said police did not know what lead up to the shooting. He also said it is unclear who was with Mitchell when the shooting happened. Coleman said most importantly, those witness may be able to tell them who killed Mitchell.
"That's what we need to do. We need to find out who actually committed this crime so that person can answer for this crime," Coleman said.
Coleman says there was no danger to the public but they want to make sure people feel safe in their communities.
"They want to be able to live outside, play outside and they want to be able to walk their dog. They don't want to necessarily want this gun violence in their backyard," the police sergeant said.
A lawsuit filed by applicants who were denied a license is progressing ahead of the September 8th start date for the program.Read More »
