LOGAN COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) - The Fourth of July weekend is here, and authorities in the Dayton Region are urging those taking to lakes and other waterways to use extra caution.
CareFlight was called to Indian Lake in Logan County Saturday afternoon. Water rescue officials say two people jumped into the lake to help a young girl after a boating accident.
Officials say a boat was pulling three people on a tube, when the child was thrown off. The boat turned around to go back and help the young girl having difficulty in the water. Two family members jumped into the water.
Officials believe Richard Houchin, 59, fell off the boat. A woman aboard the stopped boat noticed Houchin lying face down in the water. It is unclear how long he was in the water before rescuers pulled him back on the boat. Houchin was taken to Miami Valley Hospital where he died early Sunday morning.
Officials say rescuers had to pull Daniel Serey, 42, aboard the boat. He was suffering from exhaustion after lifting the child and Houchin from the lake.
Boaters should exercise extra caution. Elevated water levels bring more debris into the water and create stronger currents, especially around fixed objects.
Brett Trump, area supervisor for the Division of Watercraft, could not stress it enough, "wearing a life jacket can save a life".
A few other important things to remember:
•Make sure your boat has the required safety equipment, including the correct number of personal flotation devices and a fire extinguisher if required.
•Check that the boat's lights are working before leaving the dock if you plan on being out after dark.
•Choose a designated skipper who will remain sober.
•Watch your speed, especially after dark because of reduced visibility.
•Leave all fireworks on the shore.
The drowning at Indian Lake is still under investigation. Officials do not believe alcohol was involved.
