Mother of "abducted" child arrested for filing false police report

MIAMI TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) -- Police have arrested a woman for claiming her child was abducted.

Miami Township Police arrested 29-year-old Jennifer Ritter on multiple charges after her claim that her son was abducted triggered a statewide amber alert.

Sgt. Paul Nienhaus says Ritter called police around 2:45 a.m. on Tuesday, claiming her car had been stolen from an extended stay hotel in Miami Township with her 7-month-old son Nathan Dotson in the backseat. Ritter was staying at the hotel with her boyfriend and son.

Police investigated, eventually issuing a BOLO and an Amber Alert for Dotson just before 6 a.m.

An employee at the Home Depot across the street from the hotel in Miamisburg saw the suspect vehicle behind the store and called police.

Officers responded, finding Dotson in the vehicle and unharmed. Police returned Dotson to his family and continued investigating.

A short time later, police determined Ritter had made a false claim and took her into custody.

She is being charged with endangering children, inducing panic and filing a false police report, three misdemeanors. She was taken to the Miami County Jail.

Children's Services has been called to assist.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident. They have not released her motive for making misleading claims.
