STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — State College residents were expressing shock and sadness after the death of longtime Penn State coach Joe Paterno.

Tom Kleban is a research analyst who lives in State College. After attending Mass at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church on Sunday, he spoke about what Paterno meant to the town. He says Paterno "left an incredible legacy not only for the Penn State program but for the community as well."
A Penn State alumna, Jan McKenna, says she was in shock over Paterno's death. She says she never thought "this was going to happen this soon."
Paterno's family has announced that the coach died Sunday. His death came just over two months after his son announced that his father had been diagnosed with a treatable form of lung cancer.
