WASHINGTON (CNN/NATIONAL ARCHIVES) - Lyndon Baines Johnson, also referred to as LBJ, was born August 27, 1908. He was the 36th president.
He married Claudia "Lady Bird" Taylor in 1934. She helped him successfully campaign for the House of Representatives in 1937 on a "New Deal" platform.
Johnson became president following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. After completing that term, he was elected to his own term by a landslide margin in 1964.
The Great Society program became his agenda for Congress. He faced the issues of racial segregation and a war in Vietnam during his presidency. Johnson died of a sudden heart attack in 1973.
