WASHINGTON (CNN/NATIONAL ARCHIVES) - Jimmy Carter was sworn in as the 39th president of the United States on January 20th, 1977.
Prior to becoming president, he served as the governor of Georgia.
Carter's one-term presidency was besieged by inflation, the energy crisis and Iranian hostage situation. The events led to his defeat after just one term in office.
He's become well-respected for his post-presidency diplomatic work, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
He's also known for his work with Habitat for Humanity.
