WASHINGTON (CNN/NATIONAL ARCHIVES) - Franklin Delano Roosevelt, also known as FDR was the 32nd president of the United States. He was sworn into office in 1933 in the midst of the Great Depression.
During his inaugural address, he made one of his most famous and oft-repeated statements:
"The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself."
In 1935, Congress passed the Social Security Act, the most important and enduring piece of his New Deal legislation.
FDR served four terms in office -- the only president to have done so.
He was also known for his "fireside chats." In 1921, at the age of 39, he was stricken with polio, and though he was in a wheelchair throughout his presidency, he was rarely photographed in it.
FDR died April 12th, 1945.
