WASHINGTON (CNN/NATIONAL ARCHIVES) - Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower was the 34th president. He was
born in 1890.
Eisenhower was a five-star general in the U.S. Army and
served as supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in
World War TII. He helped plan and supervise the invasion of France
and Germany.
As president, he oversaw the cease-fire of the Korean War. He
helped launch the space race and started the interstate highway
system.
