(LIN) – After Tuesday’s big wins, 2012 presidential candidate former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., has changed the focus of his campaign from trading barbs with fellow GOP presidential candidates to taking on President Barack Obama.
"Years of flying around on Air Force One, surrounded by an adoring staff of true believers telling you what a great job you are doing, well, that might be enough to make you a little out of touch." --Romney, to supporters about Obama, after Romney won Republican presidential primaries in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin.
"I think Gov. Romney's a little out of touch. I can't remember a presidential candidate in the recent past who seems not to understand, by what he says, what ordinary middle-class people are thinking about and are concerned about."--Vice President Joe Biden, in an assault on Romney in an interview on CBS' "Face the Nation."
"One of my potential opponents, Governor Romney, has said that he hoped a similar version of this plan from last year would be introduced as a bill on day one of his presidency. He said that he’s 'very supportive' of this new budget, and he even called it 'marvelous' -- which is a word you don’t often hear when it comes to describing a budget." --Obama, on the GOP budget blueprint recently approved by the House.
"There are no marching bands. We're hitting the field. The clock starts tonight." --2012 presidential candidate and former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., at an election night party outside Pittsburgh.
" The Washington establishment wants to declare this race over, but I am committed to carrying the banner of bold conservative colors all the way to Tampa to ensure the Republican Party never abandons the timeless conservative principles of Ronald Reagan and the Contract with America. " --2012 presidential candidate and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., in a statement after primary night.
" What is the purpose of stopping? It seems strange if there’s a campaign going on with no winner. You should just fold the tent and leave? It’s still important to try to get people to talk about what they ought to be talking about. " --2012 presidential candidate and Rep Ron Paul, R-Texas, hinting his campaign will continue.
"I voted for Romney, but I'm not happy about it. It was a reluctant vote. I don't like his negative advertising and I'm not sure that he's the most genuine individual candidate. But the alternative was Gingrich, who I don't consider viable at this point." --David Avila, a 37-year-old lawyer from Washington, D.C.
"I think obviously Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., would be one of the prime contenders for a whole variety of reasons including, by the way, he's been a very impressive senator during the time he's been in the Senate. " --Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., on potential vice presidential picks if Romney wins the Republican nomination.
"We have seen commitments to end the violence followed by massive intensifications of violence. So the United States, for one, would look at these commitments and say, yet again, the proof is the actions, not in the words." --U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice, in a statement after Syria told international envoy Kofi Annan that their military will withdraw troops and heavy weapons from populated areas by April 10.
"It is not so much our triumph as a triumph of the people who have decided that they have to be involved in the political process in this country. We hope this will be the beginning of a new era." -- Aung San Suu Kyi, after a landslide victory in Myanmar's historic by-elections. The pro-democracy leader won a seat in parliament.
