Storm Team 2: Thundersnow explained

Yes, that was thunder you heard this morning. This is a very strong winter storm and a lot of rising motion or lift.  This is the same type of process we see with summer time thunderstorms. It's the same process only with today's storm we are seeing snow.

One thing to note during "thundersnow" snowfall rates increase. For example Union in northern Montgomery County saw about an inch of snow per hour. 

Hearing thunder and seeing lightning are not completely uncommon but only occur during very strong winter storms.
