ST PARIS, Ohio (WDTN) - One Miami Valley teacher is leaving her traditional classroom for a new one - the Arctic. Graham High school science teacher Chantelle Rose was chosen to be a part of the Polar Trec program from the National Science Foundation.

She leaves Thursday for a six-week journey in the dark and cold.
Wednesday, she made sure the students are ready to follow her journey and answered any last minute questions.

Chantelle will be on a coast guard icebreaker doing research on a type of fish called a copepod, which is at the bottom of the food chain.  Temperatures will be 40 below with even colder wind chill factors. These conditions will be a challenge to her but also to the fish.

Chatelle Rose, Graham High School science teacher says, "This is the first winter arctic sampling expedition so there's a lot of unknown there's a lot of things we don't know whether or not we're going to find it. where they're going to be if they're going to be sleeping."

The students will have a substitute teacher but will also be keeping tabs on the arctic journey through the internet. You can also follow Chantelle's progress, and even ask questions by going to the polar trec website
