Dog days' bite as bad as bark

Heat can be dangerous for senior citizens.

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - High temperatures and humid conditions are expected across the Miami Valley starting Tuesday, which is why a heat advisory has been issued for some area counties.

The hot weather can be dangerous for those who call the outdoors their office, like construction workers. They'll have to work hard to stay hydrated in the heat.

Others who are stuck inside can also be hurt by the high temperatures.

That's why a local agency is taking steps to keep senior citizens cool in the hot days to come.

The Senior Helpers organization helps seniors who live by themselves manage their every day chores like cooking and cleaning.

And when temperatures soar like they will this week, they also make sure they stay cool.

Doug Dever, GM of The Senior Helpers said, "We have to use a little extra due diligence with our clients and make sure they're turning on their air conditioners, staying cool, and staying safe. Our caregivers are trained on that."

If you have a senior friend or family member, be sure to call them or visit daily when temperatures rise.

Also turn on their air conditioning and urge them to take medications in the morning or at night.

And keep a damp, cool cloth nearby and limit their caffeine intake.
