DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Just last year Georgia was suffering from one of their worst droughts in years and now, the worst flooding in decades.

Since Friday portions of Northern Georgia have seen over 20 inches of rain. One toddler was killed as his families' trailer was swept over a mile down stream and in suburban Atlanta a woman was trapped in her car surrounded by water. She called out for help but rescuers did not arrive in time.

With all the flooding Georgia's governor Sonney Perdue declared a state of emergency. "The kind of lives lost, the kind of property damage we've had the kind of expenses our local government will face in recovering from this is worthy of a presidential declaration. And we've asked for that"

As hundreds of homes flood, boats have become the main form of transportation with some making due using air mattresses to float from house to house. Fires have also started popping up and has claimed at least 2 homes with fire fighters stuck on the flooded roadways.

While this isn't occurring in our area it is still important to remember that over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water so turn around don't drown. If you would like more information on how to prepare for a flood check out flash.org.
