Protecting yourself from tax troubles

DAYTON - It's that time of year, when detectives say the tax complaints start stacking up.

On Thursday, Dayton Police Sergeant Moises Perez warned residents to do lots of homework before handing over personal information to strangers.

In at least one case, a Dayton woman reported that she went to pick up her $22-hundred dollar refund from a Dayton tax service, only to learn someone else had already collected her cash.

Perez said they are seeing similar complaints, so it's important to be suspicious and ask lots of questions.

"The preparer is most important, because he is the one who has actual physical control of your information," said Sgt. Perez. "Once you check credentials, literally ask for their identification. That way you can see the name, and once the form is completed check to make sure it's the same person who you saw their i.d."

Dayton Police suggested also using the Better Business Bureau to check a companies record.
