DAYTON (WDTN) - Derrick Brooks doesn't deny he took another man's life.
Earlier this month, the 49-year-old pleaded guilty to murder and felonious assault, in the stabbing death of Darrell Murphy, 48.
"A persons standing in life, whether they are a king or a pauper it makes no difference," said Robert Deschler, with the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office. "We prosecute on the evidence we have and the crimes that are committed".
In court on Wednesday, Brooks learned his punishment will be time in prison.
"There are no victories in a case like this," said Richard Skelton, Derrick Brooks' attorney. "There's a person dead and my client is going to prison for 15 years to life".
At the time of the murder, both men were homeless. They were staying at a home on Ashwood Avenue in Dayton with several other recovering addicts.
Murhpy's friends remember him as a kind and respectful person. They hoped seeing his killer in court, would bring closure.
"I feel good, to know that for that action there was a consequence behind that," said Ricky Davis, who came from Cincinnati. "I am satisfied with that".
