DONNELSVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) - Neighbors in Donnelsville, Ohio are keeping a close watch on the situation in Fort Hood. But for the Kohn family, the tragedy hits close to home.
Their son, Matthew, is a specialist in the Army, stationed at Fort Hood.
He has only been there a few weeks, having just returned from a two-year-long deployment in South Korea.
Thursday afternoon he called his mother, Barbara Kohn, telling her to turn on the TV
"I could hear the air raid sirens in the background," said Kohn. "You just kind of got the feeling this is serious. There is something big going on."
Kohn said she was relieved that he was safe, but her heart was hurting for the victim's and their families.
"I just know that there are a lot of people that are without there loved ones tonight," she said. "You think you are in the U.S. on an Army post, that you are safe."
