DAYTON (WDTN) - Beating the chill this winter, has some drivers breaking the law.

In Ohio, it's illegal to leave a running car unattended.

Dayton Police Sergeant Wendy Stiver, said if caught a driver could be issued a ticket.

"There are multiple consequences that can come as a result of that," said Stiver.

"Many people think that they can stop at a store or warm their car up in front of their house".

Stiver said even though the owner may be only a couple feet away, it's plenty of time for a thief to strike.

That's why officers have issued a warning for all drivers to remove valuables, keep doors locked, and don't start their car until it's time to hit the road.
