WSU scores high marks on APR

FAIRBORN, Oh - The NCAA has released this year's Academic Progress Rate (APR) for student-athletes in Division I athletics for the 2010-11 academic year.

The Wright State women's tennis team posted a perfect 1000 while women's swimming (997) and track (991) continued to post high marks. Five other WSU squads scored in the 980's.  Men's basketball and women's tennis were recognized last week for ranking in the nation's top 10%.

"We are committed to achieving academic excellence, and we are pleased our APR scores continue to reflect academic success amongst all of our teams," said WSU Deputy of Athletics Roderick Perry. "I'm appreciative of the support and effort put forth by our faculty, academic advisors, coaches and most importantly, our student-athletes as we continue to make meaningful academic progress."

NCAA President Mark Emmert said top-performing teams this year posted APR scores ranging from 978 to a perfect 1,000. The number of teams in some sports may exceed 10 percent depending on the number of perfect scores.

By measuring eligibility and retention each semester or quarter, the APR provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport, Emmert said. The most-recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.

In the seven years of the NCAA's academic reform program, 2,946 different teams have received Public Recognition Awards, representing 46 percent of eligible sports teams during that time. Of that total, 209 teams have received Public Recognition Awards each of the seven years of the program.
