CINCINNATI (AP) - The Reds have acquired right-handed starter Mat Latos from San Diego for a package of four players, including infielder Yonder Alonso and right-handed starter Edinson Volquez.
Cincinnati wanted a front-of-the-rotation starter heading into free agency. The 23-year-old Latos went 9-14 with a 3.47 ERA for the Padres last season, finishing among the NL leaders in ERA and strikeouts. It was Cincinnati's first major deal of the offseason.
The Reds also gave up catcher Yasmani Grandal and right-hander Brad Boxberger.
Alonso, a former first-round pick, didn't have a place to play with Joey Votto a mainstay at first base. Volquez was coming off a disappointing season, going 5-7 with a 5.71 ERA.
