PHOENIX (AP) — A nasty brawl broke out in the ninth inning of the World Baseball Classic game between Mexico and Canada on Saturday, with Boston reliever Alfredo Aceves among the several players throwing punches.

The fights erupted after Canada's Rene Tosoni was hit by a pitch from Arnold Leon with Canada leading 9-3 at Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was a wild scene, as chaotic as any on a major league field in recent years.

After the sides were finally separated, a Canadian coach was hit in the face with a water bottle thrown from the stands. Canadian player Cale Iorg threw it angrily back into the crowd. Several police officers came onto the field, and there were skirmishes in the seats.

The game included several intense plays as Canada built a big lead in front of decidedly pro-Mexican crowd of 19,581.
