Flyer women soar to another victory

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - The No. 17/16 University of Dayton women’s basketball team rolled to an 80-52 victory in front of 6,723 fans on its annual Math Day Thursday morning at UD Arena. Dayton continues their best start in program history by improving to 16-1 on the season, including 4-0 in Atlantic 10 action.
The Flyers had a balanced scoring attack as four players scored in double digits. Dayton is 10-0 on the season when four or more players reach the 10-point plateau.
UD broke open a tightly-contested game by closing the first half on a 15-0 run to take a 44-26 lead into the locker room. Freshman guard Amber Deane, three-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, scored seven of her team-high 22 points during that run.
The Dayton surge continued during the second half as their lead never got below 14, and it grew to 28 on a Jodie Cornelie-Sigmundova layup with 38 seconds left to play.
Ally Malott, who averages a team best 12.1 points per game, got to that mark on a layup with 50 seconds to go in the first half. The 6-foot-4 sophomore forward finished the game with 17 points and seven rebounds.
Senior guard Sam Mackay (13 points, 5 assists) and junior center Cassie Sant (12 points, 5 rebounds) were the other Flyers in double figures.
UD out-shot George Washington 41 percent to 35 percent, out-rebounded the Colonials 44-42 and made five more free throws than their A-10 rivals even attempted.
Dayton’s suffocating defense forced 22 Colonial turnovers, which led to a 30-8 advantage on fast break points and 26-6 for points off turnovers.
This was the 11th time that Dayton has defeated an opponent by at least 20 points. Coming into the game, Dayton had a 22.6 point scoring margin, ninth best in the NCAA.
The Colonials (7-11, 1-3) were led by seniors Tara Booker and Shi-Heria Shipp. Both players scored 10 points.
Dayton resumes A-10 play Sunday afternoon when they host Massachusetts (3-16, 1-3) at 2 p.m. ET. UD then has a two-game road swing where they travel to Virginia to face VCU and Richmond.
