Dragons lose to the Loons on the road

Midland, Mich.(WDTN) - Scott Schebler’s run-scoring double broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning and the Great Lakes Loons went on to a 5-2 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Monday night.  The Dayton loss snapped their three-game winning streak as the Loons picked up their first win of the series.

The Dragons trailed 1-0 when they scored in the fifth.  Juan Perez doubled to right and scored on Spencer Dickinson’s single to tie the game.

Great Lakes picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead at 2-1, but the Dragons tied it in the sixth.  Kyle Waldrop led off the inning with a double to right and scored on Yovan Gonzalez’s two-out single to make it 2-2.

But the Loons scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good.  Schebler doubled to center with a man at second and one out to make it 3-2, and Jeff Hunt followed with a single to center to drive in Schebler and give the Loons a 4-2 lead.  They added one more in the seventh to close out the scoring.

The Dragons had hit well against the Great Lakes bullpen in the first two games of the series, scoring 12 runs in five and one-third innings against Loons relievers.  But three different members of the Great Lakes bullpen combined for three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.

Dragons starting pitcher Robert Stephenson worked the first four innings in his third Midwest League start.  The Reds 2011 first round draft pick allowed three hits and one run with two walks and five strikeouts.  He was not involved in the decision and was lifted when he reached his pitch limit.

Lucas O’Rear (0-2) replaced Stephenson to start the fifth inning.  O’Rear allowed three runs (two earned) over one and one-third innings to suffer the loss.  He allowed two hits and two walks with one strikeout and also had three wild pitches.  Ryan Kemp went one and two-thirds and allowed two hits and one run with no walks and four strikeouts.  Dan Jensen pitched the bottom of the eighth, giving up one hit and no runs with a strikeout. 

The Dragons picked up nine hits.  Dickinson, Terry, and Waldrop each had two. 

The Dragons (18-25) close out the series with the Loons (19-24) on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. (Radio:  WONE 980 AM).  Wes Mugarian (0-3, 7.20) will start for the Dragons.   Great Lakes will counter with Raydel Sanchez (3-6, 4.39).  The Dragons begin a three-game series at Lansing on Wednesday.  The next home game is Saturday, August 11 at Fifth Third Field against the Fort Wayne TinCaps.
