DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Even though this is not a presidential year, voters know how important it is to have their voices heard, on local and state issues.
"I plan on getting out there and voting." Said Chris Begley. "Its the right thing to do." He told 2NEWS reporter Chelby Kosto.
Kisha Taylor said she'll cast her ballot for local leadership.
"We need somebody to represent Dayton, so we can build our city back up and bring businesses and jobs back." She said
Taylor also wants to support schools and libraries.
"We need to have libraries available for our children."
Voters will be asked to pick local government officials as well as three statewide issues, including the controversial casino issue, but many voters have already cast their votes.
Election officials said there has been a big jump in early and absentee voting.
"For example, we had 8,000 people vote absentee in 2007, and this year, we had over 16,000 that requested absentee and to vote early, so definitely more people are choosing that route." Said Steve Harsman, Director for Montgomery County Board of Elections.
Voter turnout is expected at 38.5 percent.
"It is stupid for everybody to sit back at their homes, being lazy, knowing that they are not taking responsibility to say what they want for Ohio." Said voter Devaney Jones.
Polls are open until 7:30 p.m. Remember to bring your drivers license, or some sort of government issued identification.
