Simulator recreates distracted driving

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - The Ohio Department of Transportation has called on drivers to use extra caution this holiday season.

They drove the point home through a simulator that shows what can happen if you don't keep your eyes on the road. It worked similar to a video game.

While users drove the streets, they were forced to undergo different distractions, like texting or talking.

Both ODOT officials and police said they hope this serves as a reminder that all drivers need to hang up.

"The common sense approach is if you're going to make a phone call texting pull over safely and handle your business," said Deputy Chief John Dipietro of the Miami Township Police Department.

Chief Dipietro also says that accidents around malls tend to spike around the holiday season, generally because of distracted drivers.
