XENIA, Ohio (WDTN) - The Greene County Combined Health District received a grant for $115,000 from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources on May 11, 2011 for a targeted tire clean-up event, which has been completed.
The Spring Valley Township property contained a legacy tire pile, which means that the tires had been placed onto the property prior to the State of Ohio having rules and regulations concerning the proper disposal of tires. Tires were on the property when the current owner purchased the property in 1993. Although the property owner had been removing 1-2 trailer loads of tires on a yearly basis, the grant allowed for the property to be completely cleared of the public health nuisance.
Piles of tires are considered a public health nuisance based upon potential fire hazard and mosquito breeding conditions. As of December 13, 2011, approximately 94,300 tires, weighing 943.53 tons, have been removed from the property.
Liberty Tire Recycling of Grove City, OH completed the removal with 770.22 tons under this grant.
In the State of Ohio every new tire that is sold has a $0.50 fee that is applied for assisting Ohio communities and local governments to develop markets for scrap tire programs, to promote sustainable scrap tire collection drives and drop off events, and to engage in targeted clean-up events.
