MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WDTN) - The world watched as the 2012 Olympics wrapped up in London Sunday.
Family and friends of Olympic Gold medalist Kayla Harrison tuned in for the closing ceremonies at Frickers in Middletown.
"When I see clips of her (Kayla) on television my heart swells with pride," said Kayla's mother Jeannie Yazell.
Kayla's parents and grandparents traveled to London to watch her compete and witnessed Kayla win top honors in the women's judo competition.
After Kayla clinched the gold medal, the 22-year-old presented her grandfather with a very special award.
"Its a silver medal," said Gary Ogdin, as he wears it around his neck. "It is meant to go to the most inspirational person in an Olympian's life. I was speechless when she said my name."
The mayor of Middletown presented Kayla's parents with a framed proclamation during the closing ceremonies at Frickers.
"We have made August 2, 2012, the day Kayla Harrison became the first American to win the gold medal in Judo, as Kayla Harrison day here in the city of Middletown," said Larry Mulligan Jr.
Kayla's mother said her daughter should be returning to her home in Boston sometime next week. Its unclear when the gold medalist will make an appearance in Middletown, but plans are in the works.
