DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - The freezing rain and ice that prompted a Winter Weather Advisory is causing problems across the Miami Valley. At 9 a.m. more than 280 schools and businesses had announced delayed openings or were closing for the day.
No matter what direction you are driving, the conditions are dangerous. Numerous accidents have been reported, the most recent, an accident with injuries on northbound Interstate 75 at I-70.
The Advisory is in effect until noon today, and according to Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Jamie Jarosik, the sleet and freezing rain will continue to spread across the area, eventually turning back to rain as the temperature rises above freezing after sunrise.
"Be sure to allow yourself some extra time heading to work in the morning," said Jarosik. "Slow down and watch for ice on area roads."
Preparing for icing conditions

To help prevent icing, use silicone or graphite spray, sprayed into the lock. If your lock is already frozen, warm up the key, using your hands or a hair dryer. Commercial deicers are also available at local hardware stores. AAA does not recommend pouring hot water into or around your door lock because the water will refreeze.

DP& L said they are adjusting staffing schedules and DP&L service centers throughout the region are stocked with needed supplies for repairs should power lines be pulled down by an icy build-up or falling tree limbs.
DP&L advises to have a plan in the event of a power outage, including a place to stay if your home is without power for a prolonged time period. Have a storm kit with:
Report a power outage by calling DP&L: 877-4OUTAGE (877-468-8243).
