Snow wreaks havoc in the Valley

MIAMI COUNTY (WDTN) - Snow blows across state route 41 in miami county Staurday. It was so bad in spots you can't see where the road begins or ends. Ohio State Highway Patrol Troopers are trying to keep people off certain roads.

"It's going to be a continuous battle for odot and us.", said Sgt. Paul Weber of the OSHP Piqua Post. It's a battle anyone on the road will face. "Conditions are still hazardous", said Weber.

Officials say road crews have done a good job clearing, but anyone heading out, needs to stay cautious. Sgt. Chris Colbert say Troopers with the Dayton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to 32 crashes since the snow started falling on Friday night. And they've seen double that number in slide-offs.

As night fell, Troopers say expected the roads to get worse. Sgt. Chris Colbert of the OSHP Dayton Post said, "We anticipate this (Sat) evening when the temperatures drop and the winds continue like they are supposed to we will probably have a refreeze and have more problems in the morning."

In Darke County, where a level three snow emergency was in effect, snow covered everything from a fire hydrant to taking up space on a street bench. And if you're not from the area, you may get lost with snow covered signs. Some folks like the Swabb brothers take all this snow in stride as they help their Greenville neighbors dig out.

But the Swabb brothers are singing, "Oh the weather outside is frightful but the fire is so delightful and since we no place to go, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow."

From digging out to taking it easy on the roads, Dave Trimble is hoping spring comes sooner than later. "I hope the groundhog didn't see his shadow (laughter) or I guess see his shadow right?", said Trimble.

Driving in these conditions can be tricky. If you do, drive slow as it's better to arrive late than never.
