Spelbots take on science and mentoring

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Students from an all female black college in Atlanta matched wits with young women from Dayton's Thurgood Marshall High School Friday.

When you put it all together, you get a lot of mentorship and brain power.

The robot was built by an all girl squad at Thurgood Marshall High School.  When it's finished, the basketball shooting machine is part of what these young ladies will present at a big exhibition in Cleveland next month.

The members of the Math and Science Club say they debunk some research that believes that the female brain is not as well adapted to math and science.

Galvanizing the idea of women building robots were members of SpelBots, students from Spelman College in Atlanta.

The team has consistently won international robotics competitions. Most of them are computer science and engineering majors who came to the Thurgood campus to mentor and support.

They spent much of the afternoon encouraging and advising students on their mechanical creations.

The SpelBot team is on its way to the San Francisco area to encourage another group of high school girls.

The Thurgood team has finished among the top 25 percent of teams from the Midwest and South.
