Former schools chief tapped for US post

WASHINGTON (AP) - Ohio's former public schools superintendent is up for a high-level position in the U.S. Department of Education.

Multiple news outlets report that the White House on Monday nominated Deborah Delisle to serve as the department's assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education.

Delisle resigned last year as Ohio superintendent under political pressure following the transition to Republican Gov. John Kasich. She got the job while Democrat Ted Strickland was governor.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio says in a statement that Delisle is a "remarkable public servant" who would be an asset to Education Secretary Arne Duncan and his department.

The nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.
